Pelicans' Swin Cash Front Office Hire Shows GM's Desire For Diversity

The Pelicans have hired former WNBAer Swin Cash as VP/Basketball Operations & Team Development, which fits with Exec VP/Basketball Operations David Griffin’s "mentality of hiring who he sees as strong, diverse basketball minds," according to Nathan Brown of the New Orleans ADVOCATE. Cash will fill a "variety of roles, including scouting and player development on and off the court." Griffin has said multiple times since he was hired in mid-April that "one of the biggest reasons" he joined the Pelicans was Owner Gayle Benson’s "willingness to invest heavily in revamping the team’s personnel structure to add some of the best minds in the league to guide the team’s next chapter." Since Cash retired in '16, she has become a "successful analyst on TV and also hosts her own podcast," as well as serving in the front office with the N.Y. Liberty. With her hiring, Cash "becomes one of the most successful and visible women’s basketball minds added to the men’s game" (New Orleans ADVOCATE, 6/11). In New Orleans, Andrew Lopez noted the hire "makes Cash one of the highest-ranking females in the NBA and continues a string of strong hires by Griffin." This is her "first job in the NBA" (New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE, 6/11).
