Georgia Selling Alcohol In Select Club Areas Of Sanford Stadium

The Univ. of Georgia will "offer alcohol sales" at Sanford Stadium this fall, with plans to "sell beer and wine in one specific area on the club level" during the '19 football season, according to Chip Towers of the ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION. The club level is "considered a 'premium seating' area and has controlled access, and the sales are available only to a certain level of donor." Alcohol will be sold to the Magill Society, the leadership organization behind the Georgia Bulldog Club. To be a member, one "must agree to donate at least $25,000 to the UGA Athletic Association over a five-year period." Those boosters will be "unable to view the game from the serving area" (ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION, 5/30).

SOUNDING OFF: AL.com's Michael Casagrande noted selling alcohol was "again a topic of discussion at the SEC meetings this week." Commissioner Greg Sankey said that he "didn’t think that would be the cure-all for declining attendance," and Alabama AD Greg Byrne was "non-committal on the issue" yesterday. Byrne said, "They will come to the board with a recommendation and the presidents will decide if it’s the right path to go down or not. I think there will be support and more discussion probably in the next couple days here" (AL.com, 5/29). LSU AD Scott Woodward said, "I think it will (happen), but that’s a discussion that the CEOs are going to have. It’s kind of out of our hands as far as the ADs go. They’ll decide what they decide and you’ll see in the next day or two what’s going to happen and what’s going to come out of it. I’m hoping for LSU’s standpoint that we get a liberalization of the policy and see if we can serve it to our fans" (NOLA.com, 5/29).
