USWNT Members Launch Apparel Company Ahead Of World Cup

The founders plan to use sustainable materials and take a gender-inclusive approach to product designGETTY IMAGES

USWNT players Megan Rapinoe, Tobin Heath and Christen Press, along with former USWNT player Meghan Klingenberg, are "launching a company" ahead of next month's Women's World Cup that will "start with clothing but aims to expand to beauty, wellness and tech," according to Rachel Bachman of the WALL STREET JOURNAL. The goal of Re-Inc, which is so named to "suggest re-invention or re-definition," is to "increase the ranks of female business owners and seek investment from women and minorities in the largely male-dominated fashion and venture-capital worlds." The founders "plan to use sustainable materials and take a gender-inclusive approach to product design." Re-Inc's "first T-shirt will go on sale online" on June 4, one week before the USWNT's first game against Thailand. The shirt reads "'Liberte, egalite, defendez,' in French, meaning 'liberty, equality, defend.'" This is a "twist on France's national motto," and can also "be interpreted as a reference to the U.S. team's pay-equity claim" against the U.S. Soccer Federation.Press said that Re-Inc "plans to release other items, including an eight-piece 'head-to-toe lifestyle suit -- that's what we're calling it -- but it's basically a streetwear sweatsuit collection'" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 5/26).
