Tim Finchem Honored For Lifetime Achievement At SBAs

Finchem was bullish on his belief that young people have a tremendous interest in golf right nowMARC BRYAN-BROWN

Former PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem called on the industry to collaborate more closely during his acceptance speech for the Lifetime Achievement honor at the Sports Business Awards, and said that the golf business should continue to court younger fans. “Don’t listen to people who say that young people today don’t have an interest in golf,” Finchem said. “They have a tremendous interest in golf. But you have to take the game to the kids, particularly if you want to diversify the sport.” Finchem highlighted The First Tee, a youth development organization created by the PGA Tour. He said, "Golf organizations have to collaborate on programs that really work. You have to pick the programs that can work and build on those because there’s only so much in the way of resources. Every golf organization has their own set way they go about doing some things to bring young people into the game. We ought to do it together. We’ve been moving in that path. We’re getting there. I’d like to see that accelerate a little bit.”
