Packers Rookie Rashan Gary Making Impact With His Very Own Agency

Gary spoke with several agencies ahead of the Draft, but was not enticed by any of their offersGETTY IMAGES

There are two sides to the NFL, there is the "football, and then there's the business," but Packers rookie DT Rashan Gary "doesn't see why they should be mutually exclusive," which is why he launched his own sports agency in December, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com. Gary is "not certified" by the NFLPA as an official agent, but he has "one who works for him." Ian Clarke, a "longtime agent who has joined Gary on a retainer," was the one who "negotiated Gary’s deal, the first for Rashan Gary Sports." Gary said of the other agencies he spoke to prior to the Draft, “I just didn’t like the idea that they had for me." Gary is CEO and Clarke is the lead agent, but Gary's mother, Jennifer Coney-Shepherd, is the president, and there is also a general counsel. The next step is "building a stable of clients." Clarke said, “This is his business that he put in place ... I’m just there to provide ancillary services as I would with any other player or person." In addition to handling Gary’s rookie contract, there have already been "endorsement deals with Tropicana juice and Lincoln automobiles." Clarke also said that a shoe/apparel deal is "in the works" (ESPN.com, 5/19).
