Nike Thinking Outside The Box With PGA Championship Outfits

With Finau's hat included, the split look ran down from his head all the way to the bottom of his shirtGETTY IMAGES

Golfer Tony Finau during Thursday's first round of the PGA Championship "wore a black-and-white striped" Nike shirt that appeared to be an "optical illusion," according to Dylan Dethier of GOLF.com. The front of Finau’s shirt was "mostly a uniform black-and-white stripe," but on the right sleeve, it "switched, right at the seam, to a different black-and-white stripe, with more white than black." That lighter pattern "ran through to the middle of his back, where the stripes clashed and collided, creating a vertical split bisecting his back." Finau’s hat also was "split in half" -- the left side "red-orange, the right side black." When he walked straight ahead, the "split ran down from his head all the way to the bottom of his shirt." Golf "suffers from staleness," and it seems like Nike is "pushing back against that." Finau was asked about his look afterwards and said, "It’s pretty cool, don’t you think? It’s different" (GOLF.com, 5/16).

GETTING TOO CUTE? USA TODAY's Andy Nesbitt wrote golfers' hats "aren’t usually a huge topic of discussion." However, the new Nike hats worn by Finau, Brooks Koepka and "other big-name players at the the PGA Championship became a big topic of discussion Thursday as a lot of fans found them to be terrible." Nesbitt: "Why go away from the classic Nike swoosh, which is arguably the best logo in the sportswear/sneaker game? Stick with the swoosh!" (USATODAY.com, 5/16).
