Michigan State Has No Plans For General Alcohol Sales At Stadium

A Michigan law currently prohibits the sale of alcohol at Spartan Stadium, other than in the suitesGETTY IMAGES

Many Big Ten schools have recently "decided to sell alcohol at football games," but there are "no similar plans at Michigan State," according to Matt Charboneau of the DETROIT NEWS. Michigan State AD Bill Beekman "cited a state law that prohibits the sale of alcohol at Spartan Stadium, though there are sales in the suites, because they are not physically connected to the stadium." Beekman said, "At this point, it's against state law to do it and I don't see us advocating for a change in that." If the laws "do change, Beekman wasn't ruling out a move, but wasn't sure the first place to try it out would be Spartan Stadium" (DETROIT NEWS, 5/17). In Detroit, Chris Solari noted "special provisions were approved" for Michigan Stadium to be able to "sell beer when it hosted professional soccer or hockey games." If those laws "were to change, the final decision to sell alcohol would come outside of MSU's athletic department and with a new incoming president" and the BOT (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 5/17).
