Silver Discusses One-And-Done Rule, Potential Scheduling Changes

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said the league and NBPA are in the midst of "pretty intense discussions" about ending the one-and-done rule and lowering the NBA's age limit to 18. Silver said, "We never talk about the specifics of our negotiations, but it's fair to say it's something we're both very interested in doing." When Silver became commissioner in '14, he thought the NBA "should go older" with its age limit. However, he said a "variety of factors have convinced" him that the league is "better off being at 18." Silver noted there are “issues from both sides that need to be worked out" before anything is official. Meanwhile, he reiterated his thoughts on the length of the NBA's schedule, saying there is "nothing magical" about playing 82 games. He also wondered if there could be a "better way format-wise to create a season." Silver suggested implementing in-season tournaments because “in this day and age, you’ve got to keep people interested, you’ve got to keep people engaged." He said, "If we're going to play a season that begins in mid-October and goes roughly to mid-June, is there a better way of composing the season as opposed to just shortening it" (“NBA Draft Lottery,” ESPN, 5/14).
