Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed legislation "allowing gambling on college and professional sports in Iowa," according to Gruber-Miller & Opsahl of the DES MOINES REGISTER. The legislation signed yesterday "allows Iowans 21 years and older to wager on sporting events at any of Iowa's 19 casinos and online if they visit a casino once in person to prove they are at least 21." It also "legalizes bets on fantasy sports through websites and apps like DraftKings and FanDuel." The law "does not allow in-game proposition bets on college sports." While the legislation "takes effect immediately, some of the rules still need to be ironed out." The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission, which will regulate sports betting in Iowa, previously said that it would "start to develop rules for casinos to implement after Reynolds signed the legislation." Those rules "would likely be implemented in July or August," before college sports and NFL games start (DES MOINES REGISTER, 5/14).
I'M NOT DEAD: In Buffalo, Tom Precious notes New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's administration is "not officially declaring dead -- not yet anyway -- a new legislative effort at the Capitol to legalize mobile sports betting." State Gaming Commission Exec Dir Robert Williams said that officials are "still examining new amendments to a sports betting bill that limits what kind of gambling entities can participate in a mobile wagering program to determine 'if they address any of the concerns we have.'" State Sen. Joe Addabbo said that if the effort "fails before the June 19 end of annual legislative session then he will push a different route: amending the state constitution to permit the online bets, a process that will take three years to complete, if successful" (BUFFALO NEWS, 5/14).
