Indiana Will Allow General Alcohol Sales At Football Games This Season

Indiana will become the seventh Big Ten school to sell beer to the general public at home football gamesINDIANA UNIV.

Indiana Univ. has plans for a "pilot program that will allow all fans over the age of 21 to purchase alcoholic beverages" during football games at Memorial Stadium this season, according to Mike Miller of the Bloomington HERALD-TIMES. In overseeing the program, the university will then "determine whether to expand sales to other venues on campus." IU is now the seventh Big Ten school to "sell beer to the general public at home football games." IU’s athletic department commissioned Wasserman to "study the desirability" of beer and wine sales. The study found that those sales "resulted in an improved gameday experience and a boost in attendance." Vendors will be "required to check IDs, maintain a two-drink limit during each individual purchase and cease sales at the end of the third quarter" (Bloomington HERALD-TIMES, 5/1). In Indianapolis, Zach Osterman notes alcohol has been available at IU men’s basketball games in "select locations, accessible primarily to boosters and special guests." IU has not discussed the "possibility of expanding the program to home men’s basketball games" for the general public or "how much the school will charge for alcohol at football games" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 5/1).
