Bucks Emerging As One Of NBA's Most Socially Conscious Teams

The Bucks condemned a Milwaukee police officer's treatment of Brown during an incident in '18NBAE/getty images

The NBA has been "hailed for its attention to social matters," and the Bucks have emerged as one of the league's "most 'woke' franchises," according to Candace Buckner of the WASHINGTON POST. After Bucks G Sterling Brown was tased by Milwaukee police, the team "issued a statement in which it condemned the officer's treatment of their players as 'abuse' and described the incident as 'shameful' and 'inexcusable.'" In February, the Bucks "held a day-long summit that addressed police-community relations." Bucks President Peter Feigin said, "We actually feel there's a responsibility to bring the community together." A Brookings Institution report found that Milwaukee has the "'highest black-white segregation' of all metro areas in the nation." The Bucks, who have "become a source of civic pride" in the city, "have not been shy in taking responsibility for healing Milwaukee." Feigin: "We want to help address social inequalities. We're pretty outspoken about that" (WASHINGTON POST, 4/25).
