MLB Quietly Updated Colors, Made Other Changes To Logo For '19

MLB this year made its "first change to the league's logo" since '92, having "updated the colors again, in addition to a few other noteworthy changes," according to Chris Creamer of SPORTSLOGOS.net. The first step the league took in updating their look was "darkening the colors of the iconic MLB logo." Previously having just "arbitrarily been assigned shades of red and blue," the colors have "now been adjusted to be an exact match with the official colours" of the U.S. flag. MLB VP/Design Services Anne Occi said the league also "retired the words 'Major League Baseball' from the logo." Occi: "In the vernacular now we've established ourselves as 'MLB.'" Creamer noted the league's primary logo had "previously included 'Major League Baseball' written out in red underneath the batter for the past several decades." The primary logo for '19 is "just the batter and new red and blue." A series of alternate marks "were created using just the league's acronym 'MLB' either off to the side or below the batter, similar to the MLB150 logo." The new colors, fonts and styling guidelines were rolled out without "any announcement over the past several months" (SPORTSLOGOS.net, 4/23).
