Notre Dame May Install Natural Grass For Liverpool's Soccer Match

Liverpool's exhibition against Borussia Dortmund will be the first competitive soccer match played at the stadiumgetty images

EPL club Liverpool will face Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund on July 19 at Notre Dame Stadium to begin its preseason U.S. tour this summer, and it has been reported that the school will "install temporary natural grass for the match," according to LaMond Pope of the CHICAGO TRIBUNE. The exhibition "will be the first competitive soccer match" at the venue. Meanwhile, Liverpool will also play at Fenway Park on July 21 against La Liga club Sevilla and at Yankee Stadium on July 24 against Primeira Liga club Sporting CP. Liverpool CCO Billy Hogan said, "We have a tour that goes to three truly iconic venues that we're really excited about" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 4/24). In Indianapolis, Mike Berardino notes some "close observers" of Liverpool were "surprised the club didn't head back to Asia for its traditional alternate-year tour." Liverpool in '17 visited Hong Kong, and two years earlier it was Thailand, Malaysia and Australia that made the "much-anticipated itinerary." However, the "popularity of last year's preseason tour, which came within the confines" of the Int'l Champions Cup, "encouraged Liverpool officials to set out on their own this time." Monsoon conditions in Hong Kong were also a "major concern" in '17 (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 4/24). In Boston, Frank Dell'Apa notes Liverpool's game against Sevilla will be the club's "third game at Fenway Park" (BOSTON GLOBE, 4/24).
