San Diego State Taps Gensler To Design Mission Valley Venue

San Diego State has selected S.F.-based architectural firm Gensler to "design its proposed $250 million, 35,000-seat, multi-use stadium in Mission Valley," according to Phillip Molnar of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. Gensler had previously "drawn up designs for SoccerCity, the rival vision for the stadium site that lost out to the SDSU West initiative in last November’s election." SDSU said that it chose Gensler "based on its new ideas, not its previous design for the site." SDSU AD John David Wicker said that the university and its supporters actually "disliked the design Gensler developed for SoccerCity." Instead, they were "looking for something closer to Gensler’s recent design" for the LAFC's Banc of California Stadium. The university "plans for the stadium to be used year-round with concerts, Aztec football and, potentially, professional soccer." Wicker said that they have had "preliminary discussions with potential owners interested in bringing professional soccer to San Diego," both in MLS and the USL (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 4/19).
