Colorado Bill Proposal Would Allow Endorsements For Student Athletes

Colorado legislators are "about to join the debate over whether student athletes should be paid," with two state senators "planning to introduce legislation this week that would let the state's colleges pay their athletes and let the student athletes accept endorsement deals," according to a front-page piece by Anna Staver of the DENVER POST. The proposed bill by Jeff Bridges and Owen Hill would "allow students to receive money from their universities directly and/or from endorsement deals, as well as give both the right to sue if the NCAA pushed back." Bridges and Hill join lawmakers in Washington and California who are also "debating similar legislation." In March, there was a bill introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives that would "let student athletes be paid for the use of their name, image or likeness." A Univ. of Colorado spokesperson said that the school "couldn't comment until it has seen the bill." Washington State already "came out against the bill proposed in that state's legislature," with one "concern: that the NCAA might revoke the university's membership in the Pac-12" (DENVER POST, 4/10).
