FS Detroit Debuting "Players Only" Tigers Broadcasts This Season

FS Detroit's "Players Only" game broadcasts are scheduled for roughly one series a weekGETTY IMAGES

The Tigers host the Indians this afternoon in what will be the "first of 17 'Players Only' broadcasts this season" on FS Detroit, which will "consist of only former -- and perhaps, current -- players on the broadcasts," according to Anthony Fenech of the DETROIT FREE PRESS. There will "not be a traditional play-by-play broadcaster calling the action, but FSD’s stable of on-air talent and others will share their real-time insights into the play on the field." A new feature FS Detroit is using -- the Video Call Center -- will allow the RSN to "pull in players from around the country to add conversation and analysis to the broadcast from wherever they are." Depending on those players’ time schedules, they "could stick around for a few outs or a few innings, offering some outside insight into the broadcasts." The idea was "hatched from TNT’s 'Players Only' broadcasts of NBA games." FS Detroit's "Players Only" game broadcasts are "scheduled for roughly one series a week, and mark the first time a baseball broadcast has used The Video Call Center technology on a consistent basis" (FREEP.com, 4/8).
