Sources: Sather Close To Stepping Down As Rangers President

Sather (l) in recent seasons has largely worked behind the scenes with GortonGETTY IMAGES

NHL Rangers President Glen Sather is believed to be "on the verge" of informing Owner James Dolan that he will "step down" at the end of the season, according to sources cited by Larry Brooks of the N.Y. POST. Sather, who has been the Rangers President since June '00 and doubled as GM from '00-15, will "create uncertainty" in the team's front office that has been a "model of stability for the last 19 years." It is "unknown how Sather’s departure" would impact Rangers GM Jeff Gorton. Sather selected Gorton to be his "successor after first hiring him" over the summer of '07. Sather has been a "lightning rod for Rangers fans, rarely given credit for the team’s success and often pilloried for making ultimately unsuccessful deals that sacrificed the future in an attempt to win the Cup." His presence has "largely been muted as he has worked behind the scenes the last few seasons with Gorton" (N.Y. POST, 4/4). Sportsnet's John Shannon confirmed that Sather will retire after the Rangers' season ends on Saturday. He will "still be an advisor, but he will not be involved in the day to day operation of the team" (TWITTER.com, 4/4).
