R.I. Gov. Signs Mobile Betting Bill, Though App Launch Timing Unclear

Lawmakers want to pass Raimondo's proposal to help offset weak revenue from in-person sports bettingGETTY IMAGES

Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo signed into law legislation "allowing people to wager on sports from anywhere in Rhode Island once the state launches an online betting platform," according to Patrick Anderson of the PROVIDENCE JOURNAL. Raimondo proposed "remote sports betting in her budget plan for next year, but lawmakers want to get it up and running quickly to help offset weak revenue from in-person sports betting." It is "unclear how quickly a Rhode Island mobile betting app will be up and running." The Rhode Island Lottery has not said "whether its current sports betting contractors, IGT and William Hill, will be given exclusive rights to develop the remote app or whether the new system will be put out to bid." The bill signed yesterday "allows bets to be placed on sports anywhere in the state from their mobile phone or computer, but will have to sign up in person at Twin River Casino in either Lincoln or Tiverton" (PROVIDENCE JOURNAL, 3/26).
