Giants S MICHAEL THOMAS, Saints WR AUSTIN CARR and Chiefs OL RYAN HUNTER are interning on Capitol Hill this spring as part of the NFLPA's Externship program. Hunter, who is interning for Sen. JOSH HAWLEY (R-Mo.), said he has been able to "sit in on meetings with foreign policy administrators from the Middle East, whether it be constituents from the state of Missouri and the city of Kansas City, St. Louis.” Thomas, who interns for Rep. SHEILA JACKSON LEE (D-Texas), said players can be “change agents and translate that leadership on the field into making a difference.” Carr is interning for Sen. RAND PAUL (R-Ky.) who said, “It's good to see another side of our athletes” (“Face the Nation,” CBS, 3/17). The Externship program has "placed 66 players in 27 organizations this year," including Congress, the L.A. Police Dept., Fox Sports and more (NOLA.com, 3/18).

ON THE UP & UP: The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Jared Diamond profiles A's Scouting Coordinator HALEY ALVAREZ for the paper's "How'd You Get That Job" feature. Alvarez, 26, said she oversees the "international amateur and pro sides of scouting." On the biggest thing she has learned on the job, she said: "I’m going to be way wrong on players more than I am right and that I have to just write what I see for that day." Alvarez said her ultimate goal is to be GM of a baseball team. She said, "I want to represent women well. You want to make sure that you’re not ruining other opportunities for women moving forward within the game" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 3/20).
