NFL Called On For Severe Discipline If Hill Allegations Are True

This investigation comes after Hill pled guilty to a domestic violence charge while in collegeGETTY MAGES

Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill is being investigated into alleged battery that may have resulted into a broken arm for his three-year-old son, and if authorities determine Hill is in fact responsible, the Chiefs "must release him and the NFL must look seriously at banning him from ever playing in the league again," according to Jenni Carlson of the OKLAHOMAN. If Hill "broke his son's arm as is alleged, he will be a repeat offender of extreme violence" -- he pled guilty to punching and choking his pregnant girlfriend in '14 while in college (OKLAHOMAN, 3/17). NBCSPORTS.com's Peter King writes if Hill "has something to do with whatever happened to the child, there must be serious consequences" (NBCSPORTS.com, 3/18). NBCSN's Mike Florio noted Hill is "too good not to get that ‘second chance’ from other teams." Florio: "Maybe the NFL needs to protect the other teams from themselves and just banish the guy from the NFL given what happened in 2014 if it’s found that he did anything to his three-year-old child” ("PFT," NBCSN, 3/18).

CHIEFS SHOULD ACT QUICK IF TRUE: A K.C. STAR editorial states that if Hill did "break his 3-year old son's arm, the team needs to break it off with him now, no matter how fast he is" (K.C. STAR, 3/16). In K.C., Sam Mellinger wrote if the allegations of Hill's actions are true, the Chiefs "will and must release him immediately." The team has a "disturbing amount of experience with ugliness" (K.C. STAR, 3/16). ESPN's Mike Golic Jr. noted the Hill situation "seems to be playing out more in real time" than that of former teammate Kareem Hunt. The Chiefs released Hunt last fall after video surfaced of him kicking a woman, and Golic said, "Kansas City has made their point very clear with how they dealt with that, which is if this is something you have shown to be tied to enough, they will part ways with you, especially for a guy they knew they were taking a chance on in Tyreek Hill” ("Golic & Wingo," ESPN Radio, 3/18).

HUNT UPDATE: USA TODAY's Nancy Armour wrote under the header, "NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Does Right Thing With Eight-Game Suspension Of Kareem Hunt" (USATODAY.com, 3/15). In Houston, Jenny Dial Creech wrote the "worst thing that can happen" now is Hunt "serving his suspension and everyone moving on and forgetting about this issue -- which is usually what happens." Creech: "We need to get to a point where athletes who commit acts of violence are not playing in professional sports leagues. We need for teams to decide this behavior is not acceptable. If there were a true zero tolerance policy in the NFL, it would set a standard causing future athletes to see harsh penalties and hopefully think twice before resorting to violence in any situation. We are a long way from that day, however" (HOUSTONCHRONICLE.com, 3/15).
