Indians' Paul Dolan Addresses Fans Criticism Over Payroll Cuts

The Indians cut payroll for the first time since '11, and fans have been "discouraged by the team's decision" for most of the winter, according to Terry Pluto of the Cleveland PLAIN DEALER. This offseason has seen the return of the "Dolans are cheap" lament that has "periodically haunted this ownership group." Indians Chair & CEO Paul Dolan: "We have lived with that for a long time. I can’t worry about that.” Dolan noted that the team "rarely has made a profit during the 20 years his family has owned it." Dolan: "When we did, we poured the money back into the franchise. We didn’t take out a penny." He added, "For the last three years, we have been in competitive mode. We have been investing in the team well beyond the resources the team provides in order to compete. ... We have found ways to be successful. The record shows that." Dolan "strongly objects to any claims the Tribe is rebuilding." He said, "We want to win now and win tomorrow as well." Pluto noted with Chief Wahoo gone from the uniforms this season, the '19 All-Star logo "will be on the sleeves" and the Block C "will be on the hats." As for next year, Dolan said, "We’ll have jerseys with sleeves, don’t know if we’ll have a patch on it. ... The hat will be the block C." Meanwhile, Pluto noted the Indians have "sold about 13,000 season tickets," which is in the "same neighborhood as last season" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 3/16).
