Upgrades To Broncos Stadium Could Help FIFA World Cup Host Bid

Broncos Stadium currently falls short of meeting some of FIFA's venue standardsGETTY MAGES

The possibility of bringing FIFA World Cup matches to Denver is "closer to reality with the nearing completion of a major revision at Broncos Stadium," according to Kyle Fredrickson of the DENVER POST. Construction crews this month are "expected to finish installation for thousands of LED bulbs that will light up the seating bowl and field." Earning a bid to host World Cup matches "requires meeting FIFA stadium standards, and in some areas," Broncos Stadium "fell short." So the team Stadium Management Company "contracted Musco Sports Lighting to upgrade" the venue as part of its $8.3M budget for repairs and replacements. U.S. host city finalists are "not expected to be named for at least another two years." In the meantime, Broncos Stadium will also "change concessionaires, from Centerplate to Aramark, with a new contract expected in the coming weeks." Additionally, more than 80 "new signs will be installed in parking lots and areas surrounding the stadium with updated visitor information, including ride-share and light-rail station directions." Long-term plans are "taking shape to begin seat replacement" in '22 (DENVER POST, 3/16).
