BLOOMBERG NEWS' Gerry Smith noted Disney lost just under $100M on streaming in Q1 and expects to lose an additional $200M on its online video efforts in Q2, "mostly to develop ESPN+." Execs said that the company will also surrender about $150M in operating income after "cutting off licensing to competing services." Disney said last month that ESPN+ "now has 2 million paid subscribers, double from five months before" (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 3/10).

ORANGE IS EVERYWHERE: Flyers mascot Gritty is starring in a "new NHL Network commercial" that began airing yesterday. The spot is "designed to promote the nightly studio show 'NHL Tonight,' and was filmed after Gritty appeared on the network earlier this month to help rank the greatest redheads in hockey history." Featured in the commercial are NHL Net analysts Scott Stevens, Stu Grimson and Dave Reid, along with host Jamison Coyle (PHILLY.com, 3/11).
