The MLB Rangers announced plans for a new baseball housing and meeting facility adjacent to the team’s Spring Training complex in Surprise, Ariz. The multi-story, 68,280 square-foot facility will include housing for as many as 180 organizational players and staff as well as classroom and meeting space. The facility is being designed by Scottsdale-based FM Group, with Phoenix-based GCON serving as the general contractor (Rangers). In Dallas, Evan Grant reported no formal groundbreaking ceremony "will take place," and work has "already begun" on the project. The development is "expected to include 36 one- and two-bedroom suites in a three-floor dormitory along with a two-story common area that will include classrooms, an auditorium and a fitness area." The "only other team in Arizona to build living facilities for its young players" is the Indians (DALLASNEWS.com, 3/8).

LEADING THE WAY: In Phoenix, Jen Fifield noted the Indians’ complex in Goodyear, Ariz., is "well on its way" and will open by May. If completed on time, the Indians "will be the first of the 15 MLB teams that train in the Valley to build and own the housing where its players live" (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 3/8).
