Cubs Looking To Create PGA Tour Champions Event In Arizona

The Cubs and the Western Golf Association are looking to "create a PGA Tour Champions event" in March near the team’s Spring Training complex in Mesa, according to Teddy Greenstein of the CHICAGO TRIBUNE. The tournament could be "played in a pro-am style like the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am." Organizers envision a "field of perhaps 78 pros -- standard for a Champions event" -- with a Wednesday pro-am "featuring Cubs legends and perhaps even current players if it’s a day off." The main three-day pro-am "would begin on a Friday." The Champions event would "likely be played on one Phoenix-area course that has yet to be selected." Getting on the Champions calendar "should not be a problem, given that this year’s schedule has no events on the third and fourth weekends of March." Marquee Sports & Entertainment is "seeking a title sponsor to commit to a deal likely in excess" of $3M (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 3/8).
