Former Home Of Connecticut Open Weighs Future Without WTA

The Connecticut Tennis Center could potentially host a low-level tournament in '20 or soonerGETTY IMAGES

The Tennis Foundation of Connecticut is "left to weigh the future" of the home of the WTA Connecticut Open after the event left town, according to a front-page piece by Alex Putterman of the HARTFORD COURANT. The Connecticut Tennis Center, which is owned by the city of New Haven but "leased to the foundation through the year 2089, could host a lower-level tournament" in '20 or sooner, "possibly as part of the ATP or WTA Challenger series or the World TeamTennis league." Former Connecticut Open Tournament Dir Anne Worcester said that the foundation could also "reprise the popular 'legends' event that has been run in conjunction" with the Open since '11. The 15,000-seat venue will also "continue to host after-school tennis programs for children, Chamber of Commerce events, corporate training and other small functions." Worcester said that one promoter has "reached out about the possibility of staging concerts there." New Haven Mayor Toni Harp's Dir of Communications Laurence Grotheer said that despite owning the Connecticut Tennis Center, the city was "not involved in the sale of the foundation’s tournament sanction and would have limited voice in the immediate future of the tennis center" (HARTFORD COURANT, 3/4).
