Apparel Brand Files Lawsuit Over Nets' Nike "City Edition" Jersey

N.Y.-based apparel brand Coogi is suing Nike, the NBA and the Nets, accusing the trio of "swiping their iconic designs" for Nike's '18-19 "City Edition" Nets jersey, according to DeGregory & Lapin of the N.Y. POST. The lawsuit filed yesterday in Manhattan federal court claims the jersey, with a pattern called “Brooklyn Camo,” imitates Coogi's "distinctive, colorful -- and copyrighted designs." The Nets wore the jerseys during a game on Nov. 17 that was honoring Brooklyn-born rapper the late Notorious B.I.G. The lawsuit claims all parties were "well aware Biggie neither wore nor rapped about anything called 'Brooklyn Camo.'" Coogi is "suing for damages and for everyone involved to stop selling the gear" (N.Y. POST, 2/28). After the debut of the "City Edition" jersey, the Nets were scheduled to "don the look for an additional 15 games" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 2/28).
