Dolphin was suspended after referring to Maryland F Bruno Fernando as "King Kong"GETTY IMAGES

In Des Moines, Chad Leistikow noted radio voice Gary Dolphin has been "suspended from broadcasting Iowa basketball games for the rest of the season" following comments that Dolphin made after Tuesday’s game against Maryland. Dolphin referred to Maryland F Bruno Fernando, who is black, as “King Kong.” Dolphin previously was suspended by Iowa and Learfield Sports for "two games for negative comments he made about the basketball program" and backup G Maishe Dailey that were "inadvertently aired during Iowa’s Nov. 27 game against Pittsburgh" (DES MOINES REGISTER, 2/23).

THAT '70S SHOW: In Chicago, Chris Boghossian profiled local sports fan Ricky Cobb, who runs Super 70s Sports (@Super70sSports), a "sometimes brash, frequently hilarious and always entertaining Twitter account that pokes fun at athletes, celebrities and no-names alike." The social media account has now "developed into Super 70s Sports LLC, complete with a website, podcast, regular radio interviews, a monthly magazine column and the promotion of an apparel company" -- plus 236,000 Twitter followers (CHICAGOTRIBUNE.com, 2/23).

IN MEMORY: The Boston Globe honored late baseball columnist Nick Cafardo by devoting his regular Sunday column to special tributes, and Yankees Senior VP & GM Brian Cashman said Cafardo's death is a "big loss for us all." Cafardo was "one of the best people you can come across in life." Cashman: "I always looked forward to reading the Globe’s Sunday notes. I’d hunt for it on social media. ... I always found it enlightening because Nick was connected to so many people" (BOSTON GLOBE, 2/24). In Boston, Joe Fitzgerald wrote Cafardo was "more than a sportswriter; he was a writer who covered sports, and the difference is profound." He also "understood he was not the story; he was there to cover the story" (BOSTON HERALD, 2/24).
