Empty Nest: MLB Wants To Know Who Is Running The Orioles

MLB has asked the Orioles to "inform it by June who is in control of the club," with longtime Owner Peter Angelos "in declining health," according to a front-page piece by Jeff Barker of the BALTIMORE SUN. This request is the "strongest signal yet that the Orioles are transitioning from the leadership" of the 89-year-old Angelos, who is "no longer able to run the team." Every MLB club must "designate an executive as the primary contact" for the league, and for the Orioles, it is likely to be one of Angelos' sons, Exec VP John Angelos or Ownership Rep Louis Angelos. The appointment of either will "require formal approval of the baseball club owners." Sources said MLB has told the team that it would "like the Orioles to name the new executive before the next club owners meeting in June." Sources also said that "naming a control person is not the same as designating the ultimate successor" to Peter Angelos as principal owner. In recent years, John Angelos has "taken more control of the business aspects of the team," and he has "long overseen" MASN. Meanwhile, Louis Angelos is a member of his father's law firm and has been "attending MLB meetings." Neither son has "been in the public eye extensively, but they have recently become more visible" (BALTIMORE SUN, 2/22).
