Brewers Will Open Season With Highest Payroll In Franchise History

On Sunday, the Brewers re-signed 3B Mike Moustakas to a one-year, $10M dealgetty images

The Brewers' re-signing of 3B Mike Moustakas over the weekend pushed the team's payroll beyond $120M, "easily a high-water mark for the franchise," according to Tom Haudricourt of the MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL. Last year, the Brewers began the season with a payroll of about $91M. Brewers Owner Mark Attanasio said, "Our ownership group is committed to providing the resources to do the best job we can, competing on the field, providing the fan experience and developing our players." He added, "I had to make a decision are we going to sequence it or do everything at once. We did everything at once." Haudricourt notes those comments raises the question of whether or not the Brewers will have "enough cash in reserve to be aggressive at the trade deadline." Attanasio: "All the chips are all in now. We’ll find the money at mid-season if we need to." Attanasio could "not deny it is a great time to be the Brewers’ owner." The team is in a "sweet spot, on and off the field, doing well on the business side and winning games." The Brewers have a new naming-rights sponsor for Miller Park in American Family Insurance, which has "ponied up twice the previous yearly rate." They have an "absolute jewel for a spring training facility." They have "pumped enough money into the payroll to bring back most of the ’18 club that captivated their strong fan base" (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 2/20).
