Cowboys' Jerry Jones Not Willing To Give Up Home Game For Future SB

NFL owners in '14 voted that any team that hosts a Super Bowl has to "give up a home game at some point over a five-year period" to play internationally, but Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones is "not a believer" in the rule, according to Drew Davison of the Ft. Worth STAR-TELEGRAM. Jones is "adamant the Cowboys will not give up a home game for a Super Bowl," and he "doesn’t think that stipulation will preclude the Cowboys" from landing another one at AT&T Stadium. Jones said the league's rule has "varying degrees of consideration on how that’s done," and added there are a "lot of ways to skin the cat.” Davison notes the NFL "may be enticed to work with the Cowboys because, despite the weather and ticket issues from the previous Super Bowl, it is believed that Super Bowl XLV at AT&T Stadium remains the most financially profitable in history." AT&T Stadium is the NFL’s "biggest stadium with the most suites, something that is attractive for the league’s marquee game." Jones said, "We very much want another Super Bowl.” The "earliest the Super Bowl would return" is the '24 season, as the NFL has "locked in future sites until then." Atlanta and L.A. have "built/ are building new stadiums, and Jones agrees that those cities should be rewarded with a Super Bowl." Jones: “I’m a big believer that new stadiums should get the opportunity to have a Super Bowl” (Ft. Worth STAR-TELEGRAM, 1/23).

BUILDING BLOCKS: The AP's Barry Wilner noted including Super Bowl XXXVIII in Houston, the league "will have staged nine Super Bowls in metropolitan areas with new stadiums in the past 15 years." There is "nothing written on a game plan sheet guaranteeing such an award from the NFL, it’s more a nodding agreement it will happen." It "will once more" in L.A. in '22, and "very likely in Las Vegas before the end of the next decade." NFL Senior VP/Events & Club Business Development Peter O'Reily said, “There are lots of factors that come into it in determining where and when we go and what is the right sequence." He said awarding the Super Bowl to teams with new stadiums is "not necessarily a truism," but he admits there is a "track record of a number of recent buildings that have been built that are incredible facilities.” Wilner noted Minneapolis "wouldn’t have gotten the Super Bowl without having built" U.S. Bank Stadium -- an "ultramodern indoor stadium." With a "wink and a nod, Detroit was destined for a Super Bowl once Ford Field was ready and the Lions moved back downtown from the suburbs." Indianapolis "never would have been considered without Lucas Oil Stadium being constructed" (AP, 1/22).
