In addition to operating expenses, UT athletics reported making a separate $10.8M transfer to the universityGETTY IMAGES

The Univ. of Texas athletic department had more than $219M in "annual operating revenue and total operating expenses" of just over $206.5M during FY '18, according to Steve Berkowitz of USA TODAY. This is the second consecutive year in which UT has had more than $200M in both "operating revenues and expenses," as UT was at nearly $215M in revenue and $207M in expenses for FY '17. The new expense total is over $31M more than any other D-I public school "spent on its sports program during any of the 13 years for which USA Today Sports has compiled this data." The Univ. of Michigan reported spending $175.4M in '17. UT "fields 20 teams, Michigan 29." In addition to operating expenses, UT athletics reported making a separate $10.8M "transfer to the university." Texas A&M also reported more than $200M in revenue in '17, but that amount was boosted by almost $93M in "contributions received and spent by the department during that year, as the school continued a facilities-spending boom." Texas A&M has "not yet made its new report available." UT attributed "massive revenue" to the school's football program at $144.5M, a total that was "more than the total athletics operating revenue reported" for FY '17 by all but 12 NCAA D-I public schools (USATODAY.com, 1/15).
