Redskins President Allen Criticized For Lack Of Public Comments

Allen hasn't held a press conference in more than a year and a half, last taking questions in June '17 GETTY IMAGES

Redskins President Bruce Allen has "earned a reputation as one of the least transparent head executives in the NFL" after he did not "speak publicly during or after" the '18 season, according to Paras & Zielonka of the WASHINGTON TIMES. Allen "hasn't held a press conference in more than a year and a half, last taking questions" in June '17 when he promoted Doug Williams to Senior VP/Player Personnel. Since then, Allen has "sporadically granted one-on-one interview requests to various outlets." Regardless of whether or not he "talks to the press, Allen holds final say over football matters." Fans have "called for Allen's firing with near-constant use of the hashtag #FireBruceAllen ramping up in December." Short of that, there has been "speculation that Allen could be reassigned within the organization to focus on planning a new stadium, given his ties to local politicians -- and leave football responsibilities behind" (WASHINGTON TIMES, 1/8).

NEEDED A LONGER LEASH: SPORTS BUSINESS JOURNAL's Abraham Madkour writes under the header, "Redskins Didn't Give New Business Team A Chance." Former Redskins President of Business Operations & COO Brian Lafemina "aimed to be more honest and fan friendly and to repair the team's dreadful relationships with local leaders." However, the "ever-impatient" Redskins Owner Dan Snyder "obviously lost trust and faith in this group after just eight months, which is shocking considering how long and hard Snyder worked to convince Lafemina to leave" the NFL league office. The environment around the Redskins organization and FedExField is "toxic," but this is "not on Lafemina." Madkour: "It falls on Snyder and his lieutenant, Allen" (SPORTS BUSINESS JOURNAL, 1/7 issue).
