PGA Tour Postponing Curry-Hosted Tourney Planned For S.F.

The PGA Tour is dropping plans to hold a "new, Stephen Curry-hosted event at Lake Merced Golf Club" this September, according to Ron Kroichick of the S.F. CHRONICLE. The Tour had planned to formally announce the event that would be part of the '19-20 season "in the next two weeks," but talks with potential title sponsor Workday "unexpectedly broke off." Tour officials "didn't have time to find another title sponsor, especially given the course changes Lake Merced would need to make in eight months." Curry said, "We are still committed to bringing an event to San Francisco. It just won't be this year." Kroichick reports the Tour "might wait until 2021 to launch the tournament at Harding Park." That course is "unavailable the next two years because of the city of San Francisco's contract with the PGA of America." The PGA Championship will be held at Harding Park in '20 (S.F. CHRONICLE, 1/9). ESPN.com's Bob Harig noted Curry's tourney was slated to fall between the "season-opening event at the Greenbrier and prior to another Northern California tournament, the Safeway Open." It is unclear whether the date reserved for S.F. is "filled with another event or if the fall tournaments are juggled." There currently are 10 "scheduled tournament weeks in the fall" (ESPN.com, 1/8).
