Washington State Revisiting Idea Of General Alcohol Sales At Events

WSU has served beer, wine and spirits in the suites, loge boxes, and outdoor and indoor club seats since '12GETTY IMAGES

Washington State Univ. officials are "revisiting the idea" of expanding alcohol sales at athletic events after initially being turned down by the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board in both '16 and '17, according to Barry Bolton of 247SPORTS.com. WSU President Kirk Schulz said the state liquor and cannabis board is the one that "really dictates policy." Schulz: "They just were not at a point they felt comfortable having on-campus expanded alcohol sales. It’s a different board now." Schulz said he and WSU AD Pat Chun "have talked about this" and "want to move ahead." Schulz: "We just want to be sure the timing is right." Stadium consultant Emily Golembiewski said that selling alcohol at college games is about "enhancing the game-day experience." Alcohol sales to general-admission ticket holders is now "believed to be in place at approximately 60 schools, or nearly half of the FBS total." As for the timing at WSU, Schulz said, "I’m not comfortable at this point giving ’19 or ’20 as a date. I just want us to keep working on it." Bolton noted WSU has "served beer, wine and spirits in the suites, loge boxes, and outdoor and indoor club seats" since '12 (247SPORTS.com, 1/7).
