Tennessee Sports Betting Bill Gives Cities, Counties Option To Approve

A new bill proposed in the Tennessee legislature would "legalize sports gambling in the state only in cities and counties where it is approved by a local election," according to Brittany Tarwater of Knoxville-based WVLT-CBS. The Tennessee Sports Gaming Act, drafted by Tennessee State Rep. Rick Staples, imposes a 10% tax on gaming revenue, and allows for "betting on some collegiate sports and professional sports." Staples said that colleges that "do not want to allow for betting on its' teams can choose to opt out" (WVLT.tv, 1/2). In Memphis, Dave Detling noted Staples' bill is "gaining support" among lawmakers. Tennessee State Sen. Brian Kelsey is also "drafting his own version." Both bills "will be discussed when the legislature meets again" on Tuesday (LOCALMEMPHIS.com, 1/3).
