Celtics' Jaylen Brown Taking Atypical Path By Not Hiring Agent

Brown prefers hiring specialists for each facet of his business rather than just one agentNBAE/GETTY IMAGES

Celtics F Jaylen Brown “insists he won’t hire an agent” this offseason despite being in a position to “negotiate a lengthy, career-defining contract extension,” according to Gary Washburn of the BOSTON GLOBE. Brown has not had an agent since joining the NBA in ’16, though he has hired “specialists to negotiate contracts, shoe deals, and other endorsements.” Players typically use agents “for a variety of needs and services.” However, Brown said, “I wouldn’t hire an agent because I think an agent is someone who does like everything. I believe in specificity, specialization, so having somebody negotiate my contract but they wouldn’t do anything else in terms of the rest of my career. I’m figuring that stuff out, as of now.” He said that he “won’t discourage other players from hiring agents,” but he added that “leaving all of his off-court business to one person or agency isn’t what he prefers.” Brown: “If they feel like they need an agent, then they should get an agent. I’m not going to pull teeth trying to help guys realize what’s out there, what resources you have” (BOSTON GLOBE, 12/8).
