A Day In The Life With ACE Media CEO Scott Langerman

ACE Media CEO SCOTT LANGERMAN often finds himself on the road during the week visiting clients or working with the NFLPA on new content. But at home in DC, he can be seen at his favorite local brewery or checking out one of his son’s high school lacrosse games. Langerman recently caught up with THE DAILY to walk us through what a typical day looks like.

7:00am: My son TOM goes off to school, so I get up and get him out the door, although my wife VICKI does more of the heavy lifting on that end. But the very first thing I do -- I desperately need to be caffeinated. I’m not a coffee drinker, so I make a cup of tea, which is high-octane vanilla tea from a little place in northwest Connecticut. I’ll read the papers, catch up on headlines. I read the Washington Post and USA Today, which I’ve been subscribed to for a long time. I don’t eat breakfast or lunch -- something I’ve just gotten used to over the last 25 years.

9:30am: I’ll try to check email, see what came in over the course of the night maybe from folks on the west coast. I try to hit the road and time my commute into the office to miss traffic. So, I typically go in a little bit later, maybe around 9:30 or 10:00. I try to do a few work calls in the car on the way in.

10:00am-2:00pm: I do an earnest check of email. Usually, I’ll have a pretty full day of calls and meetings. In the morning, I’m talking to people in the office or in N.Y. Typically, these calls are with a player or player reps who are either working with us on a project or who are looking to develop some sort of project. It might be with folks from Bleacher Report or Sports Illustrated. We’ll talk to some of our brand partners. We have within the NFLPA 70 licensees and 32 sponsors, so we’re trying to develop a relationship with all of them. After those calls, I’ll take some time and catch up on some of the trade publications.

2:00-7:00pm: I try to focus conversations with West Coast-based people. That would be in some instances distribution partners or television buyers or studios. It’s often production partners who we’re working with. We also have an assortment of standing meetings, phone calls, probably a couple a day. That might be with CAA, who we work with. If we’re in the middle of a particular production, we try to set up a weekly check-in call. We’ll have a standing call with our player development and player services people to talk about projects that are upcoming.

Langerman and his wife Vicki at one time were part owners in a brewery and ale houseSCOTT LANGERMAN

7:00-9:00pm: I usually stay in the office late to beat the traffic -- my office is in DC and I live in Bethesda. Tom is a junior in high school and plays lacrosse, so in season I try to go to as many of his games as I can. His games are at 7:00 or 7:30, so I would leave work and go there. Other nights, I head straight home. For dinner, Vicki does the bulk of cooking at home. In another life, Vicki and I were part-owners of a chain of brewery restaurants called John Harvard’s Brewery & Ale House. Our ownership was like the third tap from the left, so nothing we could retire on, but it got us a free beer when we needed it. So we tend to hit a lot of the local pubs and breweries. There’s a restaurant we go to in Virginia called Sweetwater Tavern.

9:00pm-midnight: I fire up the laptop and work. I’m a night owl, so I get a lot done after dinner. That’s when I’ll be on email either with a game on TV, depending on what season it is. If there’s not a game on, I’ll just put music on in the background. I’m a SPRINGSTEEN guy at heart, but also like TAYLOR SWIFT. Through Tom and my other kids -- JACK and JENNY in college -- I hear a lot of contemporary music than what might normally be in my wheelhouse, but a lot of it I like. I’m also a secret musical theater lover, so I might throw in a little “WICKED” or “LES MISERABLES” or “HAMILTON.”

Midnight-2:00am: I’ll go up and watch some television. I’m a big DVR guy. I always like a good cry, so “THIS IS US” is on there. I like “MANIFEST,” “BLINDSPOT” and “MODERN FAMILY” is always on standby. I really loved “THE AMERICANS,” but it concluded last spring. Always searching for a new show. I’ll usually shut the TV off or fall asleep to it.
