PGA Tour RSM Classic Finds Home With New Calendar Date

The PGA Tour RSM Classic tees off today in St. Simons Island, Ga., and the event has "found a home the week before Thanksgiving" after shuffling fall dates between October and November, according to Garry Smits of the FLORIDA TIMES-UNION. The RSM Classic has been a "favorite spot for Tour players to bring their families," with the Sea Island Golf Club’s "array of activities." The tournament began in the fall of '10, and golfer & host Davis Love III said, "The Tour told us the first year that we would lose money. We made money and ever since we’ve grown exponentially." In nine years, the RSM Classic has raised nearly $12M for "charity for the Davis Love Foundation." Recipients include the "Special Olympics and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southeast Georgia." The tournament initially "didn’t fall within the FedEx Cup schedule and the winner did not get into the Masters." However, when the Tour "went to its wraparound schedule, the RSM Classic got the anchor position for the fall portion, making it a must-stop for many players who wanted to build momentum going into the break." Love: "It’s worked better for Sea Island and RSM to be the week before Thanksgiving. In the near future I think that’s probably where the Tour has us penciled in. There’s no guarantees, ever. But for now we’re happy with the date and the players that play love it" (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 11/15).
