Week 9 NFL Overnights: NBC, Fox Windows Help Drive Gains

A high-scoring Rams-Saints matchup gave Fox a 15.2 overnight rating yesterday in its national windowGETTY IMAGES

The NFL saw a 17% uptick for Week 9 Sunday overnight ratings, fueled by big numbers for “SNF” and the late afternoon window. NBC led the way yesterday with a 15.6 for Packers-Patriots, marking the best Week 9 “SNF” figure since the net acquired the package prior to the ’06 season. The previous Week 9 high was Colts-Patriots (Manning vs Brady) in ’06 at a 15.1. “SNF” peaked last night from 9:30-10:00pm ET with a 16.2 rating. Milwaukee led all markets with a 44.7 local rating, while Boston drew a 37.9. Meanwhile, Fox drew its own big number with Rams-Saints in the national window yesterday. The window got a 15.2 overnight rating. Fox also got a 9.2 overnight for its early regional window, which is tied for the net’s best regional window of the season to date. CBS also had a 10.0 for its singleheader coverage on Sunday (Austin Karp, THE DAILY).

BUCK STOPS HERE: In N.Y., Bob Raissman wrote watching Fox "salute Joe Buck" for doubling up on his World Series and NFL assignments was to "think he was the only one to ever engage in such 'heavy lifting.'" Raisman: "We've seen others -- like Kenny Albert, and his father Marv -- do multiple events with less fanfare." Raisman wonders how MLB execs "felt about Buck flying into Houston to do a low-profile" Dolphins-Texans game, then "having to cram to prepare for a World Series game." Clearly, for Fox, the "priority is the NFL" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 11/4).

MAKING HISTORY: THE ATHLETIC's Richard Deitsch noted CBS Sports' Deb Boulac was the lead producer for the broadcast of Texans-Broncos yesterday, marking the "first time at CBS Sports since" '88 that a "woman sat in the lead producer’s chair for an NFL game." It is also "believed to be the first time for any NFL television rightsholder since Lisa Lax and Carol Larson of NBC Sports" in the '90s. Because longtime SEC on CBS producer Craig Silver is "recuperating from a cycling accident, CBS moved one of its regular NFL producers, Steve McKee, to fill-in for Silver for Alabama-LSU Saturday night. That "left an opening on one of the NFL teams for a producer" (THEATHLETIC.com, 11/5).
