Raiders' Brent Musburger Takes Flak For Controversial Political Tweet

Raiders radio play-by-play announcer Brent Musburger is "jumping into the fray of ugly politics" after tweeting about U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), according to Jason Owens of YAHOO SPORTS. President Trump was in Bozeman, Mont., for a political rally Saturday, and when "men wearing Native American headdresses stood behind Trump, Musburger "took his shot." He tweeted a picture of the setting and wrote, “Elizabeth Warren’s ‘relatives’ backing Trump in Montana!” There has "been no comment from the Raiders or the NFL on Musburger" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 11/5). In S.F., Dianne de Guzman writes Musburger's "'joke' wasn't taken as such by some" of his Twitter followers. In replies to the tweet, Musburger was "called everything from a bigot to a 'dinosaur' to being accused of being 'out of touch.'" Some fans "responded by saying they missed former Raiders broadcaster Greg Papa," who was let go as the team's radio voice in the offseason after having worked for the Raiders since '97. Others "supported Musburger, saying the tweet was a joke and complimenting the broadcaster for the comment." The tweet also "served to dredge up controversies the longtime sports broadcaster has seen while working as a sports journalist" (SFGATE.com, 11/4).

BAD MOVE FOR BRENT? Bleacher Report's Mike Freeman tweeted, "Musburger does radio broadcasts for the Raiders. Wonder if they think this kind of disgusting bigotry is appropriate. I’m old enough to remember when NFL teams wanted Kaepernick to stick to sports." THE ATHLETIC's Tim Kawakami tweeted Raiders Owner Mark Davis is "free to hire and fire whoever he wants," but firing Papa for Musburger "will not be a proud moment for this franchise." The move is "among many bad moments this season and beyond" (TWITTER.com, 11/3).
