World Series Game 5 Clincher Rating Down From Recent Years

Fox last night drew a 12.3 overnight rating for the clinching Red Sox-Dodgers World Series Game 5 telecast. Last year, Astros-Dodgers Game 5, which ended with a walkoff in the 10th inning, drew a 12.8 overnight. Two years ago, Cubs-Indians Game 5 drew a 15.3 overnight. The 12.3 last night is up from an 11.7 for the series-clinching Royals-Mets Game 5 in ’15, which went 12 innings, and up from an 8.2 for Giants-Royals in ’14, when the series was not on the line. Game 5 last night also had competition from the Saints-Vikings game on NBC (9.7 overnight). The World Series has now topped “SNF” in head-to-head competition for three straight years. Boston drew a 43.2 local rating last night, its best MLB figure since the Game 6 clincher in ’13 drew a 55.2. L.A. drew a 26.0 rating last night.

SOCIAL STATUS: Data from social media measurement firm Sprinklr shows that in the 24-hour period beginning 9:40am ET yesterday, the World Series had 654,400 mentions on Twitter. The peak came at 11:00pm last night with 281,815 mentions. The Red Sox also had 652,600 mentions during that time period, peaking with 295,553 at 11:00pm. The hashtag #DoDamage had 236,000 Twitter mentions. The Dodgers had 159,300 mentions in the 24-hour window, while the hashtag #LADetermined had 10,400 mentions. Meanwhile, data from Twitter shows that 1B Steve Pearce was the most-mentioned Red Sox player on the platform during the World Series, followed by P David Price and RF Mookie Betts. The most-mentioned Dodgers player was P Rich Hill, followed by SS Manny Machado.

WEEKEND WARRIORS: Fox’ World Series games on Friday and Saturday night also saw declines. Game 4 on Saturday night finished with 13.6 million viewers, down from 15.4 million viewers last year for the comparable Astros-Dodgers game. Friday's 18-inning Game 3 marathon drew 13.3 million viewers, down from 15.7 million last year.
