UCLA Football Attendance At Rose Bowl At Lowest Average Since '99

UCLA's home football attendance has declined in each of the last three seasonsGETTY IMAGES

UCLA has "averaged 52,528 fans for its first five home games this season, putting the Bruins on pace for their lowest average at the Rose Bowl since averaging 49,825" in '99, according to Ben Bolch of the L.A. TIMES. UCLA drew just 41,848 fans for Friday's game against Utah, a "season-low crowd" at the Rose Bowl and the team's "smallest in 21 years." However, the game "went head to head" with World Series Game 3 at Dodger Stadium. If the numbers "hold up, UCLA would finish with its fourth-lowest home average attendance since moving" from the L.A. Coliseum to the Rose Bowl for the '82 season. Attendance has "undoubtedly suffered a ripple effect" from UCLA's 0-5 start. It was "only two years ago" that UCLA was "drawing 67,459 per game." UCLA's home attendance has "declined in each of the last three seasons after experiencing an increase of less than 1%" from '15 to '16, when the school "averaged 66,858 fans." USC could come to the "rescue of its crosstown rival," as UCLA's average attendance "could get a significant boost by closing its home schedule with games against USC and Stanford, which typically draw bigger crowds" (L.A. TIMES, 10/28).
