UConn's 15-Year Multimedia Rights Deal With IMG Worth At Least $93M

IMG has the rights to produce, distribute and syndicate telecasts of games, including women's hoopsgetty images

UConn and IMG will "continue their partnership" through '33 as part of a 15-year extension worth at least $93M that will "allow IMG to continue holding the sole rights to UConn multimedia, as well as remaining the licensing agent of UConn athletics," according to Kelli Stacy of the HARTFORD COURANT. UConn’s previous IMG deal signed in '08 was worth $80M. That previous contract had "incentives for UConn, which could have raised the yearly threshold." The extension sets a "minimum payment that IMG will make to UConn that begins" at $6M in the first year and increases by $10,000 each year after that. However, the deal is a "revenue-sharing agreement" in which UConn will receive 100% of revenue in the first three years. That then decreases to 95% for the following two years, to 90% for the two years after that, 85% for the three years after that and then to 80% for the "remainder of the contract." The extension also includes a $2M signing bonus that UConn will receive. IMG is "guaranteed in the contract exclusive rights for radio broadcasts and leaves open the possibility of a UConn radio network in the future if the sides agree." IMG also is "granted the rights to produce, distribute and syndicate telecasts of games, TV shows featuring coaches and other TV programming that focuses on UConn athletics." The extension "spells out signage and advertising at UConn games and facilities including everything from video boards to hospitality areas and concession food containers" (HARTFORD COURANT, 10/18).
