Lakers' Jeanie Buss Discusses Mental Health Movement, Therapy

Buss said that she is an example of a person who has benefitted from seeing a therapistNBAE/GETTY IMAGES

Lakers President JEANIE BUSS "isn't holding back" on a topic that is "much bigger than basketball: Mental health," according to Sam Amick of THE ATHLETIC. Buss said she has "benefited from therapy." Buss: "There is no stigma there. You can be a successful executive and admit that there are times that you have to deal with things where it's helpful to be able to talk in a safe space, in a group therapy session, or in a private session, just talking to people to help you process the things that sometimes seem so overwhelming that if you can talk, then all of a sudden they seem manageable and you can move forward past them." Buss also said she would like to see "more of this movement towards the mental wellness" of athletes because she knows the "stress that they're under and the scrutiny that they're under." Meanwhile, Buss addressed Forbes' list of the 20 most powerful women in sports and said, "I swear, they cut and paste the same damn list, right?" Buss said she was "honored" to be on the "really, really nice" list. However, she said the victims in the LARRY NASSAR abuse case were the ones with the "real power." Buss: "That's power, because they made change. You can put me and SERENA (WILLIAMS), and BILLIE JEAN KING and [NBPA Exec Dir] MICHELE ROBERTS (on there) and it's the same list -- which is great. I love being part of this great list, but (what those women did) was bravery. That's powerful. They don't get enough credit, because it's an uncomfortable thing to talk about. But it happened in sports, and that will change things" (THEATHLETIC.com, 10/12).
