TD Garden Has Different Feel For Fans With New LED Lighting System

Massachusetts-based Sylvania Lighting Solutions began working with TD Garden to renovate its systems in '13NBAE/GETTY IMAGES

TD Garden installed a new, state-of-the-art LED lighting system this summer, and the new setup "gives the arena a theater-like feel, with the court awash in the crisp, white lighting, and the seating areas dimmer than before," according to Adam Himmelsbach of the BOSTON GLOBE. The change from last NBA season was "obvious, as the arena now looks similar to Staples Center or MSG," with more light "shining directly on the action." Massachusetts-based Sylvania Lighting Solutions began working with TD Garden to "renovate its systems" in '13, with the latest change being the "most eye-popping." Celtics President Rich Gotham said the new system "creates more of a theatrical atmosphere" with the "more brightly-lit court." Gotham added not as much light is "splashing out into the stands, which leads to kind of a theater-type look in the stands." Gotham: "Everyone's generally happy, particularly the camera people and the broadcast people." Himmelsbach noted the Celtics have "one of the most rowdy, intense fan bases in the NBA." Gotham said that the Celtics are "certainly sensitive to the idea" of putting those fans in a "more shaded area." Gotham said, "We're working on ways to make sure the crowd is still part of it" (BOSTON GLOBE, 10/14).
