Louisville's Poor Start Resulting In Empty Seats At Cardinal Stadium

UL's average number of tickets scanned for the first four football games has been 34,968GETTY IMAGES

The Louisville football team is off to a 2-4 start this season, resulting in "empty seats in Cardinal Stadium" for the first four home games, according to Jake Lourim of the Louisville COURIER-JOURNAL. UL has announced an average of 50,975 fans for the four home contests, but the "average number of tickets scanned has been 34,968." That in-game average is "down from 37,775" for the first four games in '17. UL AD Vince Tyra said that the school "values both the tickets scanned (for fan engagement) and the tickets sold (for financial reasons) figures." Tyra said, "There is a national trend in attendance, the drops that we’re seeing, and we’re a part of that. But I think it would have been certainly more helpful if the Florida State game had more value this time around than it had two years ago. Because they’re not having the season that they want and we’re not having the season that we’d like." Lourim notes UL prior to the start of the season completed a $63.25M "expansion project on Cardinal Stadium." The expansion "added about 5,700 seats to the north end zone, pushing the capacity to around 60,800." The current average tickets scanned figure is about 57.5% of that capacity (Louisville COURIER-JOURNAL, 10/12).
