NHL's Daly: World Cup Of Hockey In '20 Contingent On Labor Peace

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said the league and NHLPA "hope" they can bring back the World Cup of Hockey in the fall of '20, but that is "contingent in a lot of respects ... to the status of the CBA," according to Corey Masisak of THE ATHLETIC. Both sides have the ability to opt out of the CBA this coming September, and Daly said if "either side decides to exercise that option, it will be unlikely that we can execute a World Cup given the labor uncertainty." Daly added it is "fair to say that both parties want to have another [World Cup], want to have it soon and want to do it on a regular basis" (THEATHLETIC.com, 10/7). NBCSPORTS.com's Scott Billeck noted with the status of NHLers returning to Olympic hockey still undecided, the World Cup "provides the next-best platform for a best-on-best tournament involving competing nations." A tournament in '20 "would be the fourth incarnation," after tournaments in '96, '04 and '16 (NBCSPORTS.com, 10/6).
