Sources: Canelo-GGG Rematch Draws Fewer PPV Buys For HBO

Last year's Alvarez-GGG fight drew a higher PPV number with 1.3 million buysGETTY IMAGES

The Sept. 15 rematch between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin sold approximately 1.1 million PPV buys, generating at least $94M in "domestic linear television sales," according to sources cited by Dan Rafael of ESPN.com. The HBO telecast had a "suggested retail price of $84.95 but had a higher price in most markets for those who ordered in high definition." The PPV figure was "less than the first fight," which generated around 1.3 million buys. However, the rematch "generated more pay-per-view money because of the higher price." Golden Boy Promotions declined to discuss the figures, but said that PPV sales via streaming services were 25% "more than last year's fight." Additional money was also "generated via closed circuit television sales, tickets to see the fight in more than 450 movie theaters around the United States, international television sales, sponsorship deals and fight merchandise." Meanwhile, the fight notched the "fourth biggest" live gate in boxing and Nevada history -- $23.47M via the sale of 16,732 tickets at T-Mobile Arena. Promoters also "gave away 1,451 complimentary tickets." The gate figure "places it behind the first fight last September, also at T-Mobile Arena," which generated $27.06M in tickets sales (ESPN.com, 9/24).
