Fresno State Looks To Boost Football Attendance With P5 Opponents

The last sellout at 41,031-seat Bulldog Stadium was the home opener against Nebraska in '14GETTY IMAGES

Fresno State in recent years has been "loading up on football games on the road that come with seven-figure guarantees," but new AD Terry Tumey will be "ditching that strategy" going forward, according to Robert Kuwada of the FRESNO BEE. Tumey will instead bank on football coach Jeff Tedford and the team to "continue a winning run" to fill Bulldog Stadium and "help generate the revenues required to keep afloat a department loaded down by 21 sports programs." Tumey said that Fresno State will "look to secure more home-and-home series with Power Five conference opponents, starting with the Pac-12." More attractive opponents "could lead to more fans in the seats," and it "obviously does not hurt if that opponent has a fan base that travels well." The "last sellout" at 41,031-seat Bulldog Stadium was the home opener against Nebraska in '14. In 24 home games since then, Fresno State has "had less than 30,000 in attendance 12 times." Only twice in that stretch has there been more than 35,000, so there are "no guarantees that fans will flock" to the stadium in "passing up a seven-figure guarantee on the road" (FRESNO BEE, 9/23).
